ICE launches new appointment system for immigrants who must report regularly

The Immigration and Customs Enforcement ( ICE ) office launched a new system so that immigrants can schedule appointments through an internet application that is compatible with cell phones, without having to go to offices or make a phone call.

This tool will allow non-citizens to schedule their registration appointments, required in the ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) offices, while they await immigration procedures, " the agency indicates. "Previously, appointments had to be made by phone or in person."

The new appointment scheduler is bilingual, in English and Spanish, and is available at www.ice.gov/check-in .

"The ICE Appointment Scheduler is a crucial innovation that will make it easier for non-citizens to register ... as needed, and will allow ICE to more efficiently process these individuals while they await immigration procedures, " said the Acting Director of the agency, Tae Johnson.

He added that it is part of the Biden Administration's strategy to "continue building a fair, orderly and humane immigration system," which is based on an executive order from last February.

"Immigrants can create an appointment online using the information found on their I-385 form ," the agency added.

ICE stressed that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) continues to implement the expulsion policy under Title 42 at the border, which allows non-citizens to return to their countries for public health reasons, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"In the event that people are not subject to expulsion, they are transported to an ICE facility or enrolled in the Alternatives to Detention program ... to ensure compliance with the verification requirements," it was specified.

The agency asks immigrants under open processes to go to their appointments , both in the offices of ICE and in the immigration courts.

"Those who do not report to ICE or do not attend immigration court hearings, as the case may be, may be subject to deportation, just like other people in the United States without legal status," it was specified.

Although immigrants with appointments before that agency are not in deportation proceedings, it is possible that the circumstances and evaluation of the officers change, so it is important that non-citizens have the advice of a lawyer, to avoid complications.

It was noted that the service of the ICE Victim Participation and Services Line (VESL) is also maintained at (833) -383-146 .
